Ear Syringing

How Ear Syringing works and safety measures

Ear Syringing

Ear Syringing is a very old-fashioned way of removing ear wax.

It requires you to put olive oil in your ears for three weeks to soften the wax. This can be annoying and messy, as the oil drips out and stains your clothes, pillows and sofas. Also, the oil can get stuck behind the wax in your ear canal, making your hearing worse temporarily.

The oil is supposed to dissolve the wax and make it liquid, which is then flushed out by a strong water jet from a syringe used by a nurse at your doctor’s office.

The water has to go through the wax to create enough pressure to push the wax out of the ear. This can be a sloppy process, but, more importantly, it can leave water in the ear canal, which can lead to ear infections. To make matters worse, the high water pressure needed to clear the wax from the ear sometimes damages the ear drum!
